Ban on TPO in Semi-Permanent Nail Polishes

Effective September 1st, 2025, a new European cosmetic regulation prohibites the use of TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) in nail polishes.

What is TPO?

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a chemical substance used as a photoinitiator in some semi-permanent nail polishes and artificial nail products. It triggers the polymerization/hardening of the resin under UV or LED light.

However, TPO is now classified as a *Category 1B CMR substance (toxic to reproduction), making it unsafe for use in cosmetics.

New European regulation

The new regulation in a nutshell, starting September 1st, 2025:

  • Cosmetics containing TPO will be strictly prohibited on the European market.
  • They cannot be sold, supplied, or used – not even by professionals in salons.
  • No sell-through period is foreseen: all existing products must be immediately withdrawn.
